Julie Dances - seven short pieces for solo horn 2019
duration 9 minutes
Première from Prague by Ondřej Vrabec - November 2019
Dance Little Baby! - Incy Wincy - Ladybird, Ladybird - Little Boy Blue - A Hunting We Will Go - Dr Foster - Ring-a-Ring-a-Roses
Inspired by a photo of Ondrej's young daughter dancing (now the cover of a CD), I wrote seven innocent little dances in various styles for solo horn. Each takes an idea from an English nursery rhyme though only one really tells the story. Dance Little Baby! finds a child being sung to by its mother - fragments of other composers make fleeting appearances. Incy Wincy explores the creepier tones of the horn as the spider climbs and falls. Ladybird, Ladybird finds the insect already scurrying back to its burning house in a panic. Little Boy Blue is only playing his horn in his (distant) dreams whilst his unwatched sheep are certainly not safely grazing. A Hunting We Will Go is frolicsome and capering, with whoops of excitement. Dr Foster treads cautiously to Gloucester but keeps finding the puddles. Ring-a-Ring-a-Roses whirls in a frantic tarantella..
