Child's Play...
Scherzo for chamber orchestra - 2004
duration 5 minutes

This is an orchestration of a miniature 'scherzo-concerto',. It was originally scored for ("Schubert") octet but now exists as the second movement of my wind quintet of the same name. This orchestral version might make a concert opener, or encore.

Inspired by everyday breaktime views of children at play at the school where I taught, and also by the Breugel 'catalogue' picture on the same subject, this Beethovenian scherzo is a stream of sudden shifts (of dynamics and metre) with humour both innocent and ironic; such that with the exception of a brief respite in the central section it is difficult to establish 'ground level' for other than a fleeting moment.

The piece perhaps owes most to my former/pre-1989 manner of writing in its jokiness and ecclectic use of cliché.

Scoring: 2 Flutes, 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets, 2 Bassoons, 2 Horns. 2 Trumpets, Strings
