Scherzo Serioso - - Scherzo for chamber orchestra - 2005
duration 10 minutes
Scherzo Serioso is cast in a single span, the writing is akin to the first movement of the Piano Concerto, from which indeed it was seeded - a stolen bar. As is indicated by the title, its humour is somewhat lumpy, even "reluctant", and in a measured tread. However, it also has glimpses of a more lyrical world "just beyond". Intended as a concert opener, it has sadly never been performed.
Scoring: Flute, Piccolo, 2 Oboes, 2 Clarinets, 2 Bassoons, 2 Horns, 2 Trumpets, Trombone, Tuba, Timpani, Tubular bells, Xylophone, Harp, Strings
This piece also exists in a 2-piano transcription.
